Write up in Creative Loafing Charlotte

Today is a good day. I was mentioned in an article about the Resist show by OBRA Collective that opens Friday at C3 Lab in Southend. I have 2 pieces in the show and one was pictured in the online article.

This is a milestone for me. I have been working hard over the last 2 years to create a cohesive body of work, something that had a very clear voice. I worked for me, because I had to make the work not with some end goal in mind. I worked on suppressing the inner critic and not overanalyzing the work or what direction it took me. It feels like I just reached the first stop on a very long journey. I'm excited to just rest for a moment and feel content. Content that I am on the right path, that I am moving forward.

Oftentimes when the layers of meaning in one's art doesn't reveal itself until later. I've been in many a critique where someone starts speaking about what they see in a work and its as if they were undressing the artist one piece of clothing at a time until they are completely naked. Sometimes the artist is completely blindsided that they revealed so much without realizing it. Sometimes it's just a message that is clear to the viewer and not the creator. Taking a step back from the work I've been creating has allowed me to sift through the layers, surprising myself on the depth. I invite you to see where the work takes you. It may be somewhere completely different. I share my thoughts in the near future. For now, I'm going to just enjoy this moment with gratitude.
